Cape Cornwall singers were formed early in 1997 in an attempt to resurrect the singing tradition in the local pubs around St Just. A very familiar sound at weekends and especially during St Just Feast, singing in the town had declined in recent years due mainly to the closure of our local tin mines.
The first of many public appearances came in April 1997,to be followed by a guest appearance at the Tall Ship’s concert at Falmouth Castle in July and the Cornish Gorsedd in September of 1998. Brief television appearances, the release of our first CD/cassette tape "Our Beautiful Land" followed by our 2nd CD "Men of Cornwall" in 2000 and the local radio exposure have kept Cape Singers in the public eye. Much of our success is due to the efforts of singer songwriter Harry Glasson who continues to write many of our most popular songs about Cornwall, our People and our traditions.
The Singers have been on many "tours", the first being the Isles of Scilly in April 1998 over 3 days managing to sing in all the pubs on St Mary's and The Turks Head on St Agnes. The trip was a great success and whet our appetite for more so that year Peter, our dear late chairman, went on a "fact finding mission" to Ireland. We followed inOctober 1999, sailing from Swansea to Cork and on to Listowel for 3 day's, where there are more bars than weeks in the year, then on to Kenmare. We were very well received and had a great time. On our return to Cornwall we had a request to sing atthe Kernewek Lowender (worlds largest Cornish) festival in South Australia after some thought it was decided that we could do this, and so in May 2001 26 singers with their wives and friends set off for Australia.
What a trip! Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and all the bars in between. Never has Cornish singing been so well received by so many Cousin Jacks. More information on this trip is contained elsewhere on the website.
Upon our return we continued our busy programme of singing locally in pubs, clubs and concerts raising money for our chosen charities. The stage of the Royal Cornwall Show beckoned us one June day where we “entertained” the
crowds. The beer tent also enjoyed good custom.
We followed up our 1999 Irish trip with a long weekend in Dublin in the autumn of 2002. Even with due diligence and constant effort we, sadly, failed to visit every bar. We did manage, however, to leave 6 members of our party behind in the airport bar when we took off for our return trip to Cornwall. They shall remain nameless.
2003 saw the release of our third CD “Along the Shore” featuring, once again, a stunning title track by Harry Glasson. In the autumn of that year we travelled to Brittany to sample some French culture. Another epic trip. This time we went with our intrepid coach owner/driver Mr Thomas Thomas of Sennen. Not only was it the first time that he had driven abroad, it was also the first time he had been abroad. It was quite “exciting” to be a passenger in a 52 seater coach in such circumstances! He excelled himself.
2004 saw a successful trip to Maesteg in South Wales in October
